sneak peek & goodbye.
this is just a sneak peek of the first quilt i've completely finished for my new collection, "Homebodies" (which previously had a tentative different name). i have four more quilt tops awaiting topstitching and binding, one more sitting beside the machine to get pieced together, and four more little bundles of fabric dying to be cut. so, i have my work cut out for me. my goal is to have the collection up on etsy by the end of february, thus making it my winter/spring '09 collection. i am really excited to get through this pile of work, and i believe it really is my best yet! all will include interesting top stitching (this quilt pictured has zig zag stitching), as well as hand sewn binding.
totally unrelated, i said goodbye to a dear old friend of almost ten years last week. it was bittersweet, and slightly ridiculous ;) i will miss him.

progress.
i tried to get a bit of sewing done, some catching up on quilt tops i had started but left partially done. adding borders, grids, and just generally finishing up. i also got the remainder of the zig zags done on the mint & orange colored quilt, but i'm still trying to decide on a border.

next on the sewing table: red/aqua/white!

project #2 for today: sewing "room" redo
well, when we moved the living room around, we sort of just tossed my sewing area back together on the other side of the room. after spending a week trying to sew, and realizing that the space wasn't efficient or pretty, i decided today was a good day to fix it. eventually when we move and i hopefully have an even larger space to work with, i'll do more with the walls and add a cool lounge-ing chair, and buy a new work station table and chair. but for now, this will have to do. i organized EVERYTHING today, dug out some little bowls to hold small things like buttons and trims, and purchased a neato birdcage (and bird) to hold my ribbon spools. (pat won't stop making fun of me for buying the birdcage!) i moved the hanging lamp from the bedroom that we never used in there, and now i have sufficient lighting, which was a problem before.. i can't wait to get a new table, the one i'm using is an old dining room table that is my mom's that she won't let me paint because she eventually wants it back (good reason! ;))-- the only good thing about it is that it has leaves that fold up and down if i need them or want to tuck it away quietly. you can see the 2nd half of a quilt i'm in the midst of, ontop of it (the 1st half is hanging on the wall to the right...).
okay, onto the photos....

mantle redo, diy.
[click to see all photos larger!]
well, i have been inspired by this photo, for some time now:
and decided that i could maybe try something SORT OF like that. i say sort of, because who could ever find frames that odd size to mimic the wainscoating? and i certainly was not up for the task of making my own, for a low budget diy project this weekend... so. i had one 24x36" frame already up on my mantle, which housed an inexpensive black and white poster that was simply filling space. i went out and bought a second 24x36" frame, and a roll of wrapping paper from Border's, which i had seen numerous times and always thought to myself, "i want to wrap gifts in that," but never remembered to purchase. until yesterday. (the wrap, by the way, is plain white paper with black FUZZY(!!!) flowers. since the wrap was 6.5 feet by 27", it proved absolutely perfect with none to spare for this project! i think 3 frames would have been better, maybe more balanced, but the mantle is only big enough for 2....
here is the mantle yesterday -- including brand new candle holders purchased at target and tj maxx...
and here is the mantle a few minutes ago after this morning's project...
now, normally i would actually hang the frames on the wall.. but i am trying to get away without putting any more holes in the wall than necessary. so they will sit on the mantle for now. my hope is that when we end up moving (whenever that is...), we'll have a good wall to hang them on. because for a project that cost me all of $25, they're pretty sweet.
